This Youth Day, Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum turns its focus to the next generation of South African artists

This Youth Day, Rust-en-Vrede Gallery + Clay Museum turns its focus to the next generation of South African artists with three exhibitions celebrating creativity, self-expression, and artistic development.

Opening on 13 June 2026, Junior Portrait Award 2026, THREADed, and Young@Heart showcase the work of young artists from across the country while highlighting the teachers, mentors, and creative communities that help nurture emerging talent.

At the centre of the programme is the Junior Portrait Award 2026 Finalist Exhibition. Now in its third year, the award has become an important platform for young portrait artists aged 16 to 18. This year, 237 entries were submitted from across South Africa, with 27 finalists selected for exhibition.

The portraits reveal a remarkable range of approaches to identity and self-representation. Some works demonstrate impressive technical skill, while others focus on personality, emotion, and storytelling. Together, they offer a glimpse into how a new generation of artists sees themselves and the world around them.

Alongside the portrait exhibition is THREADed, a collaborative project by Johannesburg-based NPO Ojiji and the Little Artists School. Bringing together children’s art, textiles, storytelling, and design, the exhibition explores creativity as a shared process rather than an individual pursuit.

What makes THREADed particularly interesting is its focus on the relationships behind the artworks. The exhibition highlights how ideas develop through mentorship, conversation, and creative exchange, demonstrating the important role that guidance and support play in artistic growth.

In the CUBE, Young@Heart presents ceramic works created by children and mentors from several Cape Town art centres, including the Peter Clarke Art Centre, Red Cross, Tygerberg Art Centre, and Bitska Ceramics. Working with clay encourages experimentation, play, and discovery, resulting in works that are imaginative, expressive, and full of personality.

Viewed together, the three exhibitions celebrate more than artistic talent alone. They reflect the value of creative education, mentorship, and community in helping young people develop confidence, curiosity, and a sense of belonging. As South Africa marks Youth Day, Youthful Expression offers an uplifting reminder that the future of the country’s art scene is already taking shape in classrooms, studios, and community art centres across the nation.
