Presented as part of Toyota Stellenbosch Woordfees 2026, Anything But Static: A Selection of Modern and Contemporary Still Life Artworks brings historical and contemporary approaches to still life into the same exhibition.
Flowers, food, fabric and domestic objects appear across the selection, but the exhibition is interested in more than arrangement and observation. Objects become carriers of memory, belief, culture, mythology and personal association, giving familiar subjects different meanings depending on who is looking and when.
The exhibition also traces how still life has moved beyond its traditional conventions. Everyday things remain central, but contemporary artists often use them to address questions extending well beyond the objects themselves.
Works are drawn from the Kilbourn Collection, the Caro Wiese Collection, the Sanlam Collection and other private collections, alongside selected pieces from upcoming Strauss & Co auctions.
The exhibition is presented at the Oude Leeskamer in Stellenbosch alongside Strauss & Co’s Art Jewellery in Conversation with Still Life, also part of the 2026 Woordfees programme.
