Norval Foundation, in collaboration with Mount Nelson, presents Interior Weather, an exhibition bringing together modern and contemporary African art within the historic interiors of one of Cape Town’s best-known hotels.

Installed across the Mount Nelson’s lounges, corridors, salons and patios, the exhibition considers the relationship between art, architecture and atmosphere. Colour, texture and material become tools for shifting the mood of a space, moving from brightness and energy towards reflection and stillness.

Spanning six decades of artistic practice, Interior Weather brings together works by Jan-Henri Booyens, Virginia Chihota, Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix, Nicholas Hlobo, Dada Khanyisa, Eddy Kamuanga Illunga, Wole Lagunju, DuduBloom More, Cassi Namoda, Ephraim Ngatane, Jody Paulsen, Aviwe Plaatjie and Themba Siwela.

Painting, textile, sculpture and mixed media are brought into conversation with the hotel’s historic architecture, with the exhibition treating the idea of an “interior” as both a physical environment and an emotional state. Colour takes on the quality of temperature, surfaces carry a sense of presence, and gesture becomes a way of communicating inner experience.

Historic works by Ephraim Ngatane sit alongside works by contemporary artists, creating a dialogue across generations and highlighting the changing forms and concerns of African artistic practice.

For Norval Foundation, the exhibition extends its programme of presenting modern and contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora in settings that encourage different forms of engagement. At Mount Nelson, the works become part of the hotel’s everyday spaces, allowing art to be encountered as part of the rhythm and atmosphere of the building rather than within the conventional gallery setting.

Interior Weather is on view at Mount Nelson until February 2027.
