South African artist Kimathi Mafafo is included in the upcoming group exhibition A Stitch in Time at Paul Smith. The exhibition brings together a group of artists working with contemporary fibre and textile practices.
The show highlights a new generation of artists exploring the possibilities of fibre art today. Moving between craft traditions and contemporary art, the participating artists work across a range of materials and techniques, reflecting the growing interest in textile-based practices within the contemporary art landscape.
Mafafo’s work centres on embroidery and textile assemblage. Using found and repurposed fabrics, she creates layered compositions that explore themes of identity, memory and cultural inheritance. Her practice uses textile as a medium through which personal stories and shared histories can unfold.
Across the exhibition, artists draw on techniques such as embroidery, stitching and fabric construction in different ways. Some engage with traditional methods and cultural histories, while others experiment with the material to push the medium in new directions. Through these varied approaches, A Stitch in Time highlights the expressive and conceptual potential of fibre art today.
