Glossolalia at 99 Loop Gallery in Cape Town presents new abstract works by Neil Nieuwoudt exploring papermaking, mark-making and symbolic visual language.

Glossolalia is a solo exhibition by Neil Nieuwoudt presented at 99 Loop Gallery.

The exhibition introduces a new body of abstract works that explore papermaking as both material process and visual language. Drawing on handmade recycled paper created by the artist, the works emphasise texture, surface and the physical act of making as central elements of the composition.

Nieuwoudt began producing his own paper in 2020 during the global pandemic. What initially started as a practical solution gradually became an integral part of his artistic practice. In these works, the paper is no longer a passive support but a material presence that shapes the work itself.

Through the slow and tactile process of pulping, forming and drying fibres, papermaking becomes intertwined with the act of painting and mark-making. The resulting works reveal surfaces that carry their own history of gestures, textures and layered interventions.
