The Norval Foundation invites learners across Cape Town to participate in the Norval Student Art Prize 2026, a city-wide art competition dedicated to nurturing young creative voices.
Centred around the theme “Dream”, this year’s edition draws inspiration from Tanda Rima by acclaimed artist Portia Zvavahera. Learners are encouraged to explore imagination, memory, and their visions for the future of South Africa through expressive and original artworks.
This initiative reflects Norval Foundation’s ongoing commitment to art education, accessibility, and the development of the next generation of African artists.

Selected artworks will be exhibited at Norval Foundation, one of South Africa’s leading contemporary art institutions, offering young artists a rare opportunity to showcase their work in a professional museum context.

Who Can Apply
The competition is open to all learners from Grades 1 to 12, with entries judged within the following categories:
- Foundation Phase: Grades 1–3
- Intermediate Phase: Grades 4–6
- Senior Phase: Grades 7–9
- FET Phase: Grades 10–12
Theme: DREAM
Participants are invited to interpret the theme Dream in a personal or imaginative way. This could include:
- Aspirations for the future
- Personal memories or inner worlds
- Cultural or collective dreams
- Abstract or symbolic interpretations
Submission Requirements
- Format:
- 2D artworks (A4 or A3)
- 3D artworks (maximum 30cm x 30cm)
- Medium: Open (all materials accepted)
- Documentation:
Completed application form and indemnity form must be submitted with the artwork - Important:
All works must clearly respond to the theme Dream
Judging Criteria
Entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges using the following criteria:
- Relevance to the theme
- Concept and storytelling
- Emotional impact
- Use of technique and materials
- Originality and creative thinking
Prizes
Prizes will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners in each category.
While no monetary prizes are offered, selected works gain significant exposure through exhibition at Norval Foundation.
