Few South African artists have been written about as extensively as Irma Stern, yet this ambitious exhibition at Norval Foundation shifts the focus away from the myth of the artist and towards the circumstances that shaped her life.

Irma Stern: A Life of Displacement is the first chapter in a multi-year exhibition programme developed in partnership with the Irma Stern Trust and Nedbank. Drawing entirely from Stern’s archive and personal collection, the exhibition traces the movements, experiences and historical forces that informed her work, revealing an artist shaped as much by migration and uncertainty as by artistic ambition.

Born in Germany and raised between continents during a period marked by political upheaval, war and rising antisemitism, Stern experienced displacement long before it became a defining subject of contemporary discussion. The exhibition examines how these experiences informed her search for belonging and identity, while also shaping the journeys that would later take her across Southern Africa, Zanzibar and beyond.

Rather than presenting Stern solely through her paintings, the exhibition opens up the broader world she inhabited. Visitors encounter personal documents, travel artefacts, archival material, works on paper and rarely seen artworks that illuminate the connections between her life, her travels and her creative practice.
