Opening for July’s First Thursdays, Being Seen is a group exhibition at 99 Loop that considers the many ways visibility is constructed, negotiated and experienced. Working through figurative painting and drawing, the participating artists reflect on how identity is expressed, perceived and interpreted.
Rather than treating the figure as a straightforward portrait, the exhibition presents it as a site of shifting meanings, where appearance, presence and selfhood remain open to interpretation. The works offer a range of perspectives on what it means to be seen, and who determines how we are seen.
The exhibition features work by Adrian Ranger, Alexis Schofield, Barry Yusufu, Dominique Cheminais, Edinah Chagwedera, Frances Black, Luca Nicholas, Paul Wallington and Qhamanande Maswana.
