Dreams of Reason is a solo exhibition by Norwegian artist Lars Elling presented at Everard Read at Leeu Estates.
The exhibition introduces Elling’s work to South African audiences in his first solo presentation in the country. Known internationally for his distinctive figurative paintings and narrative imagery, Elling brings together works that reflect on perception, memory and the psychological dimensions of contemporary life.
About the Artist
Lars Elling was born in Norway in 1966 and currently lives and works between South Africa and Norway. He holds a Master’s degree from the Bergen Academy of Fine Arts.
Elling is widely recognised for paintings that combine elements of realism, surrealism and cinematic composition. His works often present enigmatic scenes in which everyday environments merge with dreamlike narratives.
His work is held in several major collections, including the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (formerly the National Gallery of Norway), the Trondheim Art Museum, the European Commission and the Arts Council Norway.
In addition to his painting practice, Elling is also an established author.
The Exhibition
Across Dreams of Reason, Elling presents a series of works that explore the boundary between observation and imagination. His paintings often depict solitary figures, interior spaces and atmospheric landscapes that feel suspended between reality and dream.
Through careful composition and nuanced colour, the works evoke narratives that remain open-ended. Scenes appear familiar yet subtly disquieting, inviting viewers to consider how memory, perception and emotion shape the way we experience the world.
