STIAS Artist-in-Residence Fellowship | 2028 Open Call

Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), Stellenbosch

The Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) invites established artists to apply for its Artist-in-Residence Fellowship for the first semester of 2028.

Open to visual artists, writers, filmmakers, composers, designers and practitioners from other creative disciplines, the fellowship offers dedicated time to develop an independent project within an international, multidisciplinary research environment.

Applicants should have an established creative career, a recognised body of work and a clearly developed project they wish to pursue during the residency. Projects that engage with other disciplines are encouraged, while relevance to South Africa or the wider African continent is considered an advantage.

What the fellowship provides

Selected fellows receive accommodation in Stellenbosch, return travel, a monthly living stipend, office facilities and access to Stellenbosch University’s library. The programme also offers opportunities to exchange ideas with researchers and creative practitioners from around the world.

Please note that STIAS does not provide specialised art studio facilities.

Applications must include a motivation letter, a two-to-four-page project proposal, a detailed CV and one or two recent examples of creative work.

Application deadline: 31 October 2026, 23:59 UTC
Residency period: First semester of 2028 (January–June)
Selection outcomes: By 31 March 2027
