Terra Incognita | Group Exhibition at Knysna Fine Art
31 October – 30 November 2026
Terra Incognita, a group exhibition at Knysna Fine Art, presents contemporary landscapes by 46 artists, each approaching the subject from a different perspective.
The title, Latin for unknown land, suggests territory that has yet to be mapped or understood. Here, the landscape is not necessarily a familiar or reassuring place. Shifting horizons, uncertain ground and contrasting viewpoints offer a broader picture of how artists see and interpret the world around them.
The exhibition takes in the beauty, scale and sometimes unsettling character of the natural world, with works that move between observation, imagination and personal interpretation. The range of approaches is reflected in works such as Jannie Uitlander’s Self Portrait of a Landscape, an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 121.5 × 91 cm, and Jan Tshikhuthula’s Thiko II, a large-scale work in soft pastel on paper measuring 150 × 300 cm.
With artists working across different styles and media, Terra Incognita offers a wide-ranging view of contemporary landscape art, from recognisable places to less easily defined territories.
