An Evening with Sam Nhlengethwa | Goodman Gallery Cape Town
Thursday, 5 November 2026 | 17:00–19:30
Goodman Gallery Cape Town hosts an evening of music and conversation with Sam Nhlengethwa to mark the closing of Common Purpose, an exhibition featuring his work alongside that of the late David Koloane.
Nhlengethwa will play selections from his vintage vinyl collection and share stories about the artworks on view, offering a personal account of the people, music and experiences behind his paintings and collages.
Jazz has long been central to Nhlengethwa’s work, particularly his portraits of musicians and depictions of performance spaces. It also connects him to Koloane, whose paintings and drawings captured the energy of Johannesburg’s streets, musicians and cultural life. Both artists played important roles in the city’s artistic community and were associated with the Bag Factory and Thupelo Workshops.
The evening includes drinks, music selected by Nhlengethwa and a jazz vinyl set by Sonik People, bringing the exhibition’s connection to South African jazz into the gallery itself.
