Everard Read Cape Town presents a new edition of Cubicle, the gallery’s ongoing platform for focused exhibitions and site-specific installations. Running for two weeks, the programme gives artists the opportunity to present concise bodies of work that encourage close engagement with individual ideas, materials and processes.
Part of the Heat Winter Arts Festival, this edition brings together six distinct presentations by Adele van Heerden, Klara du Plessis, Matt Watt, Oupa Sibeko, Shayna Arvan and Smiso Cele.
Highlights include Adele van Heerden’s Riparian, a multidisciplinary project developed during a residency at NIROX that considers visible and invisible water systems within the Cradle of Humankind through painting, photography and sound. In 00:00:00 O O O Poem, poet and artist Klara du Plessis explores the relationship between language, performance and visual form, while Matt Watt’s The Incredible Exploits of Billy Fargo examines the shifting meanings of symbols through conceptual and media-driven imagery.
Drawing on research into the history of District Six, Oupa Sibeko’s Straatmate uses frottage and collaborative mark-making to evoke the energy, memories and everyday experiences of the neighbourhood’s former residents. Shayna Arvan’s Paintings Of presents intimate works that reflect on memory, representation and the distance between lived experience and its visual record. Smiso Cele’s Ilanga Laseb’Sika Alithanyelwa extends his ongoing exploration of gardening, labour and personal history through drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
The exhibition programme is accompanied by a series of events linked to participating artists. An immersive sound evening, When You Enter Water, featuring Adele van Heerden and Botanicas, takes place on 11 August. On 14 August, artist Oupa Sibeko joins curator Voni Baloyi for a discussion exploring the ideas behind Straatmate. The exhibition opens on 6 August, including a live performance by Sibeko, and concludes with a public walkabout and drinks on the lawn on 15 August.
