The latest edition of EBONY/CURATED’s Modern Masters series brings together a remarkable selection of artists whose work helped shape the course of South African art across the twentieth century and beyond.
Rather than presenting a single history, Modern Masters VIII reveals a field of artistic production formed through different regions, experiences and visual traditions. Seen side by side, the exhibition highlights how modern art in Southern Africa developed through many voices, each contributing to a broader cultural conversation.
The exhibition includes paintings and works on paper by artists whose practices span generations and approaches. From the pioneering experiments of Walter Battiss and Gerard Sekoto to the distinctive visual language of Esther Mahlangu, the selection offers visitors an opportunity to encounter influential works that continue to resonate in contemporary art today.
Featured artists include Walter Battiss, Barbara Burry, Peter Clarke, George Diederick During, Hargreaves Ntukwana, Jack Heath, Jane Tully Heath, Simon Moroke Lekgetho, Esther Mahlangu, Sandra McGregor, Phaswane David Mogano, Nathaniel Mokgosi, Edward Roworth, Winston Saoli, Fred Schimmel, Gerard Sekoto and Gordon Vorster.
