An evolving installation exploring care, memory, repair and participation through performance, textiles and contemporary art.

Each July, Berman Contemporary’s annual UNBOUND residency shifts the focus from finished exhibitions to the act of making itself. The gallery becomes a working studio where visitors can observe an artist’s ideas developing over the course of a month.

This year’s resident artist is Johannesburg-based Camilla Pontiggia, whose multidisciplinary practice spans installation, performance, textiles, film and participatory projects. Her work often centres on care, memory and the social rituals that emerge through everyday acts of making.

For Mending A Kitchen Table, Pontiggia transforms the gallery into a shared space for research and exchange. Using bread, clay, textiles and acts of repair, the project considers how mending can extend beyond objects to encompass relationships, histories and communities. As the residency unfolds, visitors are invited to encounter the work in process and witness how ideas evolve through conversation and collective participation.

A series of public encounters forms part of the residency, allowing visitors to experience the project as it develops. Each session begins with a short performance before opening into a more informal period of making, conversation and participation. The public programme takes place on 11 July, 18 July and 25 July, from 11:00 to 13:00. Attendance is free, but booking is essential.
