GATHERERS Mandy Johnston at Berman Contemporary Gallery Cape Town

Mandy Johnston's solo exhibition at Berman Contemporary, presenting sculpture and installation created from reclaimed materials and the remnants of earlier work

What remains after a moment of change? Gatherer, Mandy Johnston’s solo exhibition at Berman Contemporary, considers this question through sculpture, installation and works created from the remnants of earlier pieces.

Using wire, ash, light and reclaimed materials, Johnston assembles a series of installations that reflect on transformation as an ongoing process. Burnt fragments, altered surfaces and reconstructed forms carry traces of previous lives, suggesting that materials, like people, continue to evolve rather than arrive at a final state.

Fire is a recurring presence throughout the exhibition, not as a symbol of destruction alone but as the beginning of another cycle. Objects that have been burned, broken or discarded are reworked into new forms, revealing the possibilities that emerge through adaptation and reuse.

Installed across the gallery, the works encourage visitors to move through the space at their own pace, discovering shifting relationships between structure, fragility and light. Individual pieces remain open to interpretation while sharing a common interest in how experiences are carried forward through material and making.

Rather than focusing on endings, Gatherer reflects on the ways change continues to shape people, places and objects over time. The exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter a practice grounded in observation, experimentation and the continual process of becoming.
