In Uncommon Sense, Johannesburg artist Lorienne Lotz presents a new series of paintings that reflect on a world where certainty has become increasingly elusive. Drawing on references from art history, literature and familiar idioms, she creates imagined scenes where humour, tension and contradiction unfold side by side, inviting viewers to question the stories we tell ourselves and each other.
Lotz builds her paintings through repeated cycles of layering, erasing and reworking, leaving traces of earlier images beneath the surface. Figures appear and dissolve, while symbolic objects and fragments of narrative shift between the familiar and the surreal. Rather than illustrating a single idea, the works remain open-ended, allowing different readings to emerge.
Power, identity and the complexities of contemporary life run throughout the exhibition. Without offering simple conclusions, Uncommon Sense explores the uncertain space between order and disorder, certainty and doubt, creating a body of work that feels both timely and deeply human.
Opening Reception: 6 AUGUST 2026 @ 5:00PM
