One hundred works by current AVA members turn the gallery at 35 Church Street into a snapshot of who is making art around the organisation now.

AVA 100 marks the return of the Association for Visual Arts’ Members Exhibition, bringing together 100 works selected from its current membership.

There is no single theme holding the exhibition together. Instead, its interest lies in the range: established names appear alongside emerging and independent artists, with different generations, disciplines and stages of practice sharing the same gallery.

That mix also reflects the changing shape of AVA itself. By August 2026, the organisation had grown to 430 members, making the exhibition less a survey of one particular tendency than a broad cross-section of the artists currently connected to the institution.

The setting matters too. AVA has occupied 35 Church Street for more than 55 years, and the gallery has long functioned as a meeting point for artists, exhibitions and audiences in central Cape Town. AVA 100 places that history alongside a very current view of the membership using the space today.

The exhibition opens on Friday, 25 September from 17:00 to 20:00, with opening remarks at 18:00 by Andrew Lamprecht, Curator of Historical Paintings & Sculpture at Iziko South African National Gallery.
