Featuring artists from across Africa, The Afterlife of Empire considers what remains when political systems change but their influence does not disappear.
Rather than proposing a single African story, the exhibition places different histories, locations and experiences alongside one another. Its artists approach the legacies of colonialism through subjects including landscape, architecture, migration, race, identity, extraction and the body, examining how inherited structures continue to influence everyday life.
Some works confront history directly, while others reach it through memory, place or personal experience. Moving between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Lagos and Cairo, the exhibition reflects how the past continues to surface across the continent.
The idea of an “afterlife” here is not limited to what empire left behind. It also describes what happens when inherited histories are questioned, altered or reimagined. The past continues to influence the present and can also be challenged and remade.
The Afterlife of Empire asks how inherited histories might be confronted, reworked or understood differently.
