Jenny Jacobs Cape Gallery Exhibition

Jenny Jacobs uses bold colour and expressive brushwork to capture the atmosphere of familiar landscapes, from Cape Town’s Sea Point Promenade to places encountered on her travels.

For Jenny Jacobs, painting is as much about the feeling of being somewhere as it is about the view itself. Her landscapes favour strong compositions, loosely defined shapes and vibrant colour, with contrasting blues, oranges, greens and reds giving the work its energy.

One of her subjects is the Sea Point Promenade, a place she knows well from her daily walks. Rather than recording every detail, Jacobs concentrates on the activity and atmosphere of the coastline: people walking their dogs, joggers passing by, kayakers on the water and waves breaking against the sea wall. It is a familiar Cape Town scene, interpreted through colour, movement and her own experience of the place.

Jacobs rekindled her interest in painting while living in London, where she attended the Hampstead School of Art and developed a particular love of landscapes. Now based in Cape Town, she continues to draw inspiration from her immediate surroundings as well as her travels through Southern Africa, Europe and Australia.

Her paintings are less concerned with faithfully reproducing a landscape than with recalling what it felt like to be there – the light, the space, the colour and the small details that make a place memorable.

About the Artist

Jenny Jacobs is a Cape Town-based painter whose work centres on expressive interpretations of landscape. Having returned to painting during her time at London’s Hampstead School of Art, she draws on familiar surroundings and travel experiences, using bold compositions, abstracted forms and contrasting colours to convey a sense of place.
