Guy Du Toit at Everard Read Cape Town

Guy du Toit’s bronze hares read, ponder and offer flowers in HARELOOM, a playful look at the habits and contradictions that make us human.

For more than a decade, the hare has been a recurring character in Guy du Toit’s sculpture. In Hareloom, his latest collection of bronzes, these familiar creatures take on distinctly human qualities. They contemplate the world, exchange gestures of affection and occasionally appear caught up in their own importance.

Works such as The Pied Piper, Studying the World, Hare on Stool and Flowers for You & Me show du Toit’s affection for the absurd. His hares are full of personality, with expressive poses and exaggerated forms that make their behaviour immediately recognisable. Some are imposing in scale, adding to the humour of seeing such an ordinary animal take on an almost monumental presence.

There is more to these sculptures than a fondness for rabbits. By allowing the hares to stand in for people, du Toit gives us a slightly different view of ourselves, including our vanities, vulnerabilities and capacity for kindness. Humour has long been central to his practice, and here it provides a welcome way of considering human behaviour without taking it all too seriously.

About the Artist

Guy du Toit (b. 1958, Rustenburg) is an established South African sculptor who graduated from the University of Pretoria with a BA in Fine Art, receiving a distinction in sculpture. His practice spans bronze, stone, wood and steel, alongside drawing in pen, ink and charcoal.

Known for his inventive use of everyday objects and unexpected combinations of form, du Toit has exhibited extensively in South Africa and internationally. His long-running series of bronze hares has become a distinctive part of his practice, bringing humour and recognisable human characteristics to his sculptural work.
