Experience HEAT: Winter Arts Festival 2026 in Cape Town from 6–15 August. Explore exhibitions across 15 galleries and museums alongside live music, theatre, comedy, opera and digital art in the city centre.

This August, Cape Town’s city centre becomes a walkable celebration of contemporary culture as HEAT: Winter Arts Festival 2026 returns with ten days of visual art, live performance and digital experiences. Bringing together 15 galleries and museums alongside theatres, music venues and public spaces, the festival invites visitors to explore one of South Africa’s most vibrant cultural precincts on foot.

The 2026 festival theme, Ctrl + Z, asks what it really means to undo, repair and begin again. Borrowed from the familiar keyboard shortcut, the theme examines the difference between reversing actions in the digital world and confronting the far more complex realities of social, environmental and historical repair. Across exhibitions, performances and discussions, artists and curators consider how creativity can help us rethink inherited systems and imagine new ways of living.

Curated by Voni Baloyi, this year’s visual arts programme explores reparative curatorial practice, creating space for reflection, dialogue and meaningful encounters. The theme also coincides with South Africa’s 30th anniversary of the Constitution, encouraging audiences to consider what genuine repair and justice might look like beyond symbolism.

Festival founder Mary Corrigall extends the conversation to ecology through the idea of rewilding, highlighting the relationship between artistic practice, sustainability and environmental responsibility. Meanwhile, curator Nkgopoleng Moloi frames curiosity as an essential act of rediscovery, suggesting that revisiting familiar histories with fresh perspectives can open the door to lasting change.

Complementing the exhibitions is an extensive live programme featuring jazz, folk, R&B, hip-hop, opera, theatre, stand-up comedy and digital art experiences, all taking place within easy walking distance throughout Cape Town’s city centre.

Whether you’re gallery hopping, attending an evening performance or discovering new artists, HEAT 2026 offers an immersive way to experience Cape Town’s creative community during the winter season.
