Learn the traditional Japanese art of mokuhanga at this hands-on woodblock printing workshop with Natasha Norman during HEAT Winter Arts Festival 2026 in Cape Town.

Step into the world of mokuhanga, the traditional Japanese woodblock printing technique behind the iconic Ukiyo-e prints of artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige. Presented as part of the HEAT Winter Arts Festival, this hands-on workshop offers an introduction to a printmaking tradition that has captivated artists for centuries.

Led by Cape Town artist and printmaker Natasha Norman, the workshop introduces participants to the distinctive materials and methods that set mokuhanga apart from Western relief printing. Instead of oil-based inks and a printing press, the process uses water-based pigments, hand-carved wooden blocks, washi paper and a handheld baren, creating prints with subtle layers of colour and remarkable depth.

Working from pre-carved woodblocks, participants will learn how colours are applied and built up by hand before producing two original mokuhanga prints to take home. Along the way, the workshop explores the history of this enduring printmaking tradition and the techniques that continue to inspire contemporary artists around the world.

Norman brings extensive experience to the workshop. A graduate of UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art, she has undertaken three residencies in Japan to deepen her knowledge of mokuhanga and has exhibited both in South Africa and internationally. She is also co-founder of Mokuhanga Kai, a society dedicated to promoting Japanese woodblock printing in South Africa, helping to expand access to this distinctive, non-toxic printmaking practice.

Designed for beginners as well as artists looking to explore a new medium, the workshop offers a rare opportunity to experience the slower, tactile rhythm of Japanese woodblock printing while learning directly from one of South Africa’s leading practitioners. Whether you are curious about printmaking, Japanese art or simply keen to try something new, this is a rewarding way to spend an afternoon during the HEAT Winter Arts Festival.
