The File Cannot Be Restored brings together the work of Nicola Brandt, Sahlah Davids and Tshepiso Moropa in an exhibition that considers how memory continues to shape the present. Presented as part of HEAT Winter Arts Festival 2026, the exhibition takes its title from the language of digital failure, using it as a starting point to reflect on histories that cannot simply be erased or reset.
Working across photography, collage and textile-based installation, the three artists approach archives, landscapes and inherited traditions from different perspectives. Brandt examines the traces of colonialism and political power embedded within place and memory. Davids draws on textiles, upholstery and beadwork to explore family histories, Cape Muslim heritage and the experiences passed between generations of women. Moropa combines archival imagery, oral histories and folklore in layered collages that imagine the archive as something living rather than fixed.
Rather than offering neat conclusions, The File Cannot Be Restored invites visitors to encounter memory as something continually reshaped through material, storytelling and lived experience. Together, the works reveal how personal histories and collective narratives remain intertwined, opening space for reflection on the ways the past continues to inform the present.
