Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly 2026
Forty-eight artists open their doors across Fish Hoek and Clovelly this October, turning 20 studios and shared workspaces into a three-day art trail through Cape Town’s Deep South.
Fish Hoek & Clovelly, Cape Town
Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly returns for its second edition with a much larger line-up than its 2025 debut. Visitors can follow a self-guided route through 20 locations, meeting artists where they work and seeing painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, mosaics and mixed media along the way.
This year brings together returning artists and a substantial group of new participants, making the trail broader in both scale and range.
The appeal is in the variety. In Clovelly, Sasha Scholtz and Marlise Keith share a stop where collage, drawing and mixed media sit alongside Scholtz’s teaching studio, while nearby Kyoko Kimura Morgan brings Japanese paper traditions into conversation with ceramics, boro mending and sumi-e ink painting. Photographer Angela Buckland, landscape artist Kay Price Lindsay and Sue Jowell are also among the artists opening their studios in the area.
Across Fish Hoek, the route moves between individual studios and two shared hubs. Mothership Studios is home to 13 artists working across painting, illustration, mixed media and tattoo art, while Fish Hoek Studios houses 11 resident studios and will present a group exhibition in its communal space.
There are plenty of distinctive practices to encounter along the way. Chris Bladen is known for finely detailed bronze fish and bird sculptures; Laura Cooke works across acrylic, watercolour and mixed media in intuitive responses to South African landscapes; Mashilo Magongoa makes mixed-media sculpture rooted in township visual culture; and Elizabeth Vels brings decades of experience in papermaking and artists’ books.
The Fish Hoek Mountain route extends the trail into textiles, embroidery, mosaics and design. Sisters Emma and Leila Rowett work together as Threads That Bind Us, creating hand-drawn and free-motion embroidered homeware inspired by fynbos and proteas, while Yda Walt works with hand-printed textiles and linocuts and Mel Miller creates mosaics from glass, marble, semi-precious stones and found objects.
The weekend begins with a ticketed preview on Friday, 9 October. The opening takes place at AP Jones on Fish Hoek Main Road at 09:30, with a bespoke installation and live performance before visitors head out onto the studio trail. Preview tickets are R150, with proceeds supporting Project Flamingo.
Ticket holders also receive a coffee voucher from Peak Café, a glass of Lubanzi wine to enjoy along the route and a Project Flamingo badge.
From Saturday, the studios open free to the public from 10:00 to 16:00. No ticket is required, although donations to Project Flamingo are welcome and badges will be available for sale.
Alongside the studio visits, visitors can contribute a miniature Post-it artwork at Peak Café and vote for their favourite entry in the Lubanzi Eco Wine Bucket Challenge.
With artists spread through homes, shared studios and neighbourhood spaces, Open Studios offers a different experience from a conventional exhibition: the chance to see where work is made, meet the people behind it and take an original piece home directly from the studio.
