September Cape Town Flagship Evening Sale

Strauss & Co’s Cape Town auctions run across two sales this September: the Flagship Evening Sale and a timed online Day Sale, both focused on modern and contemporary South African art.
The Evening Sale takes place on Tuesday, 15 September and includes major works by Maggie Laubser, Penny Siopis and Irma Stern, alongside artists such as Kate Gottgens, Georgina Gratrix, Gladys Mgudlandlu, Esther Mahlangu, Cecily Sash and Maude Sumner.
Several of the highlights date from the 1930s, an important period for both Laubser and Stern, when their work began to receive wider recognition after the criticism they faced earlier in their careers. Each artist went on to become a central figure in South African modernism.
At the same time, Strauss & Co’s Day Sale runs online from 19 August until 15 September 2026, with bidding closing at 2pm SAST on Tuesday, 15 September. It offers another selection of modern and contemporary art for collectors following the September sales.
If you are in Cape Town, the works can also be seen in person at Brickfield Canvas in Woodstock before the auctions close. The showroom is open on selected dates throughout the sale period, with extended hours on 1 and 15 September and viewings by appointment over the weekend of 5–6 September.
