Ayobola Kekere-Ekun presents Terrains of Memory, a new body of work that considers memory as something that shifts and changes over time rather than remaining fixed in the past. The exhibition follows the artist’s recognition as the 2021 Absa L’Atelier Ambassador and marks a development in her practice towards questions of growth, resilience and self-definition.
Working with folded fabric forms, Kekere-Ekun creates sculptural surfaces that evoke landscapes shaped by experience. The repeated folds become metaphors for the ways memories, grief, desire, fear and identity gather, unravel and reconnect over time. Rather than offering resolution, the works acknowledge the ongoing process of living with what has shaped us while remaining open to change.
Terrains of Memory invites viewers into a thoughtful consideration of how experiences are carried, transformed and reinterpreted over time. Through tactile materials and layered forms, the exhibition reflects on what we hold onto, what we let go of and what remains.
