Theo Paul Vorster marks 20 years of working in lino printmaking with The Shape of Passage, a new solo exhibition at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery. The exhibition brings him back to the gallery where he held his first lino-cut exhibition in 2006.
The new body of work considers passage in several forms, from movement through landscapes and places to the effects of time, memory and change. Rather than revisiting earlier work, the exhibition reflects the development of Vorster’s practice over two decades.
An important part of the exhibition is the relationship between the lino blocks and the prints made from them. Vorster is hand-painting the original lino blocks in oil, turning each one into a unique work in its own right. The painted blocks will be shown alongside hand-printed editions on Fabriano paper, hand-coloured with acrylic ink.
Once a block has been painted, it can no longer be used to produce further prints, permanently closing the edition. The block therefore becomes both a record of the making process and a one-off artwork, retaining the cuts, marks and decisions behind the finished prints.
